Whisky or Whiskey

Whisky, often referred to as the “water of life,” is a diverse and beloved spirit enjoyed by people around the world. It comes in various categories, each with its unique characteristics, and is often savored neat, on the rocks, or as a key ingredient in classic cocktails.  

The difference between the spelling ending “Ky or Key” is that Ky is produced in Scotland and Canada, Key is Produced in the USA, or Ireland  

The number on the label example 12 years means that the youngest whisky in the blend is 12 years  

Whisky Categories: 

  • Scotch Whisky: Hailing from Scotland, Scotch whisky is known for its rich history and distinct regional variations. It can be broadly categorized into Single Malt (made from malted barley in a single distillery) and Blended Scotch (a blend of malt and grain whiskies). 
  • Brand Name: Glenfiddich, Macallan. Oban Talisker  
  • Blended Johnnie Walker Teacher, Famous Grouse, White label, J&B, Ballentines    
  • Aged Blended Whisky           Chivas, Johnnie Walker black lable, however most house brands also produces aged whisky 
  • Bourbon Whiskey: A type of American whisky primarily made from corn (at least 51%). It’s known for its sweet and full-bodied flavor profile. 
  • Brand Name: Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace. 
  • Tennessee Whisky Jack Daniels  
  • Rye Whiskey: Originating from the United States and Canada, rye whiskey uses at least 51% rye in its mash. It tends to be spicier and drier than bourbon. 
  • Brand Name: Bulleit Rye, Canadian Club, Crown Royal Seagram’s V.O. 
  • Irish Whiskey: Typically, triple-distilled for smoothness, Irish whiskey is known for its approachable and mild flavor profile. 
  • Brand Name: Jameson, Bushmills, Redbreast. 
  • Japanese Whisky: Inspired by Scotch whisky-making techniques, Japanese whisky has gained international acclaim for its craftmanship and quality. 
  • Brand Name: Yamazaki, Nikka, Hakushu. 

Serving Suggestions: 

  • Neat: Enjoy the whisky in its purest form, sipped slowly to savour its flavors and aromas. Use a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the scents. 
  • On the Rocks: Serve whisky over ice to slightly chill and dilute it, which can mellow the flavor and make it more refreshing. 
  • With Water: A few drops of water can open the whisky’s flavors and aromas, especially for cask-strength or high-proof whiskies. 

Classic Whisky Cocktails: 

  • Old Fashioned: A timeless favorite made with bourbon or rye, sugar, bitters, and an orange twist. 
  • Whisky Sour: Whisky (usually bourbon), lemon juice, and simple syrup shaken with ice and garnished with a cherry. 
  • Manhattan: Typically made with rye whisky, sweet vermouth, and bitters, garnished with a cherry. 
  • Mint Julep: Bourbon, fresh mint leaves, sugar, and crushed ice create a refreshing southern classic. 
  • Rob Roy: A Scotch whisky version of the Manhattan, made with Scotch, sweet vermouth, and bitters.
